Waiheke Island

Just a quick ferry ride from Auckland, Waiheke Island is an oasis of vineyards, beaches, and rugged trails waiting to be explored. Most people come here for wine-tasting, but Waiheke’s natural beauty makes it perfect for hiking and kayaking too. Don’t miss out on the coastal walking tracks that provide stunning views over turquoise waters – the sunsets alone are worth the trip!

Waitomo Caves

Known for its glow worm-filled caverns, Waitomo Caves offers visitors an opportunity like no other. In fact, the glow worms (Arachnocampa Luminosa) you can witness underground here are unique to New Zealand, making this a must-not-miss stop. If merely looking at an earthly, glow-in-the-dark galaxy isn’t enough to get the adrenaline pumping, consider trying black-water rafting through the caves or taking a guided tour to explore hidden waterfalls underground.
The cave system in Waitomo is one of New Zealand’s largest and includes stunning stalactite and stalagmites formations that are equally as photo-worthy.

Hobbiton

Even if you’re not a huge Lord of the Rings fan, this once-movie set is worth a visit for its enchanting landscape, immersive experience, and complimentary hobbit-themed drink at the Green Dragon Inn. The Hobbiton movie set was used for the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, situated on lush, rolling farmland dotted with colorful hobbit holes and quaint gardens, transporting you straight to Middle-earth. Stroll through the Shire, enjoy a drink at the Green Dragon Inn, and soak in the scenery that feels like stepping into a storybook.
As the land is still privately owned by the Alexander family sheep farm, all trips to this fantastical set are guided so booking ahead of time is essential. Here’s a sample tour you can book.

This itinerary outlines nine days of continuous adventure on the North Island of New Zealand. Spend a couple days exploring Auckland and the nearby islands, head out west for some black sand beaches and secret coves, hit up some insane hiking trails, and head to the east coast for some stunning beaches that draw the local crowds all summer. This itinerary is partially in hotels, but most of it is geared towards campervanning or rooftop tenting it through the North Island (that's what we did & LOVED it). It also includes a few hours of driving a day, and quite a few hiking opportunities (of course these can be substituted for other activities in the area). If you don't want to drive as much you could always spread the activities over more days, or skip your least favourite part to spend more time in the other areas ... but good luck trying to choose! Each day outlines activities to fill your day, how much driving, what to eat, where to stay, and other suggestions / information. This itinerary covers the following specific places: -> Auckland -> Waiheke Island -> Hobbiton -> Marakopa -> New Plymouth (Mt Taranaki) -> Tongariro National Park -> Lake Taupo -> Coromandel Peninsula -> Coromandel Forest Park & so much more! Note: if you're interested in doing both North and South Island in one trip, you should definitely consider purchasing our 3 week itinerary (found on our thatch home page) as it includes all of this same information & everything on the South Island!

Snow Sports on Mount Ruapehu

One of the few places in the North Island where you can ski, Mount Ruapehu is a must-visit for winter sports lovers. With two major ski fields – Whakapapa and Turoa – there’s plenty of terrain for both beginners and advanced riders. And if you’re not into skiing or snowboarding, the volcanic landscape of Ruapehu is stunning year-round, with hiking and scenic chairlift rides offering incredible views over Tongariro National Park.
