Beaches of the Basque Country
Your trip to the Basque Country is incomplete without a trip to at least one of these beaches... That are not La Concha! Most are easily accessible by public transit, and a few are a short walk away from a Metro station (the Greater Bilbao area has its own Metro system, connecting almost a million people)

Arrigunaga Beach
@elizabethhanchett
A relatively quiet beach sandwiched between cliffs, this is the best beach in the municipality of Getxo. Ereaga is bigger and easier to get to, but the views are not as spectacular!

Playa Gorrondatxe
@elizabethhanchett
This beach is not as accessible as Arrigunaga, but it makes up for it in absolutely stunning views... And you don't even need to actually go to the beach to enjoy the views. If you're visiting in winter or on a rainy day, you can still enjoy it from the cliffs.

Barrika
@elizabethhanchett
For some of the best sunset views in Northern Spain, head to this beach, where the cliffs face due west. Sunset in the summer is around 9:30, and you can grab a drink and some pintxos at the bar while watching the sky change colors.

Gorliz
@elizabethhanchett
One of the most popular beaches in the Bilbao area, this beach is accessible by Metro and a short walk. Get off at Plentzia, keep walking, and you're there. There are plenty of bars and restaurants on the way, and a few pop-up bars if you're visiting in the summer.

Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve
@elizabethhanchett
Not a beach *per se*, but this entire region is full of beautiful, pristine beaches with world-class surfing (yes, really!). Be aware that this entire area is a protected wildlife preserve so there won't be as much freedom, and due to tides there may be less sand at certain parts of the day. It's definitely worth driving around and exploring the small towns and villages as well as the various overlooks of the Bay of Biscay.

Laga
@elizabethhanchett
This is a relatively secluded beach, but well worth a visit. It's another beach surrounded by cliffs (The Basque Country is a land where mountains meet the sea... Often literally.) but it is one of the most stunning beaches you'll ever see. Pro-level travelers should go when it's cloudy and rainy, especially if you surf. Thank me later.

Playa de la Arena
@elizabethhanchett
The most expansive sandy beach in the Basque Country, it's a perfect place to relax and spend the day as if you were on any beach in any other part of Spain. If that's what you want, anyway. Promise I won't judge!

Looking for more inspiration for your trip to the Basque Country? Check out my other guides!

While this is still a largely undiscovered part of the world by most foreigners, it's widely known as a culinary mecca for everyone with an interest in food and food culture. Basque cuisine is renowned worldwide for being some of the most visionary and avant-garde in the industry, and food as a whole is an extremely important part of Basque culture. There's so much more to do in the Basque Country than just enjoying the food though! The entire region is truly a gift to the planet in terms of natural beauty, being nestled between mountains and the sea. Basques have been fishers and mountain climbers, sailing the seas and scaling mountains, while also developing some of the strongest industry in Southern Europe. Here's a guide to some of the absolutely crucial visits you *must* make while you're in the area, whether you're based in Bilbao or San Sebastián (referred to as "Donosti" by Basques, a shortened form of its Basque name Donostia), though I prefer Bilbao because I'm biased. 😜 This guide encompasses everything from landmarks to towns and even a few restaurants, perfect for when you're considering whether to check out this beautiful and charming region. I focus on the Spanish Basque Country as it's what I'm most familiar with, but recommendations for the French Basque Country (known as the "Iparralde" or "north country" in Basque) will come soon!

Hola! I believe that travel should be accessible to everyone regardless of social status and economic status without breaking the bank. I want everyone to be able to see the world like a local, especially the two places I love most outside of my home base of NYC: the Spanish Basque Country (especially Bizkaia) and Barcelona. If you're looking for a trip to these iconic and beautiful parts of the world, I'm the one to help you feel like a local without the big budget!
