Durango Favorites
Durango, Colorado, is one of our favorite cities in the United States. Why? It’s in the Goldilocks-zone between not-too-big and not-too-small. There are interesting attractions here, but it’s also a contemporary, four-season working town where one could comfortably settle down. The food is good. There are snow-capped mountains 45 minutes to the north, desert 45 minutes to the south and Utah’s sandstone playgrounds an hour to the west. We can see ourselves making a home here, someday!

Taco Libre - Taqueria & Cocktails
@venture4wd
Last night, my delicious margarita was mostly ice, so I drank it quickly and ordered a second one. Although in hindsight, the first margarita might’ve been enough and I should have slowed down. I had carne asada quesadillas, and I can’t remember what Shannon had, but it was VERY good, in a fun atmosphere. We’re looking forward to next time!

81301 Coffee House and Roasters
@venture4wd
This is the best coffee shop in Durango, having tried most of them. Delicious, well-prepared coffee, great vibe, the staff have been there a while and they really seem to love what they do. Not to mention, the coffee cake is a moist and delicious brick of brown sugar, as it should be!

Fired Up Pizzeria
@venture4wd
It’s located in the heart of downtown Durango, in an old brick building with both sidewalk and rooftop dining options. It’s a very fun and inviting atmosphere. The wood-fired pizza itself is so-so; I’d grade it a B. It’s very tasty and well-crafted, but 75% of the time, they serve it a little more charred than I’d prefer. The one thing that makes this place really stand out is the Smoked Mozzarella and Jalapeño Dip. It’s absolutely to die for!

HomeSlice Pizza
@venture4wd
One of three locations in Durango, all of which are decent, but this newest location features a great space, and it was absolutely delicious during our lunch today. We both ordered slices and a plate of garlic knots, which were superb. It’s tucked away in a new development on the east side of town, and it also has a bar. Best pizza in town, for sure.

A hip taco restaurant and bar in the heart of downtown Durango. The vibe is contemporary and it’s a great place for chips, queso, tacos, quesadillas, or a delicious margarita at the bar. We didn’t meet the owners, but the bartender mentioned that they are into overland travel and mobile-living. A fun place to hang, but it is an intimate setting and does get loud from time-to-time. Sidewalk dining is an option!

James Ranch Grill
@venture4wd
Very high-quality, local-vore burgers and sandwiches, with radically fresh ingredients. This restaurant and grill just north of Durango is also a charming farm. It’s a great venue for weddings, live music, or just chilling out on the grass on a hot summer night. They serve craft beer, and kombucha, and it’s reminds me of the type of eatery one might find in Vermont. Highly recommended.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad
@venture4wd
I’ve never personally experienced this passenger rail experience, but I’m including it anyway, because it’s a famous attraction and well-known that it’s a one-of-a-kind experience aboard an antique steam-engine, featuring amazing scenery in Colorado’s San Juan mountains. I need to put this on my bucket list. Are you not into trains?!

Lower Hermosa Campground
@venture4wd
This is a small forest service campground north of Durango, Colorado. There are fire rings, picnic tables, vault toilets, but no hookups for vans or RVs. It is a seasonal fee campground, but it’s relatively inexpensive if you’re looking for a quiet place to stay for the week that isn’t too far from town. Wooded setting up in the hills. Moderately popular so you’ll likely have neighbors. Surprising decent cell service if you need to do work on the computer.

Oasis RV Resort & Cottages Durango
@venture4wd
If you’re in a van or RV, and you’re looking for a place to stay in Durango proper, this place is top choice. It’s open year round with laundry, showers, wifi, and full hook-ups. Sites are gravel and range from tent to big-rig. We got a 30 amp with water site, since the Revel doesn’t need sewer, saved a few bucks. It’s very charming, clean, friendly and well-kept. It used to be a KOA, I believe. It takes about 15 minutes to get into town and it’s about 10 minutes from the Durango airport. We enjoy our stays here.
