5 Days in Tahiti, French Polynesia 2023

With a ticket sale of US $689 round trip, we departed from Seattle airport and arrived in Papeete, Tahiti by Air Tahiti Nui.

Airline used: Air Tahiti Nui - meals and snacks are included.

Most common languages: French and Tahitian. Most people can speak a bit of English.

Currency: Pacific Francs CFP

Payment methods: cash (CFP, sometimes USD & Euro also accepted), credit cards (Visa, Mastercards & American Express).

Recommendation: exchange your cash after arriving in Tahiti airport. Most of stores, restaurants and hotels accept credit cards. Taxis and vendors in the markets only accept cash.

Transportation: car rental, taxi, bus.

ÉcoCar Company by the Papeete Airport offers standard US$50/day and automatic US$60/day. They require 24 hours notice for booking. Please specify whether you want standard or automatic at the time of the booking.

Taxi is available from the airport and ferry terminals. Hotel front desk can also call taxi for you.

Bus is available from across Cinemas Liberté near the Papeete Market to the airport. It is CFP200 (US$2) per person each way.

Accommodations: hotels and Airbnb.

I stayed at Kon Tiki Boutique Hotel. They offer a wide range of racing for different types of rooms: from windowless cabins to spacious apartment rooms. It’s right across from the ferry terminals, a US$35 taxi ride away from the airport, and 10 minute walk from the Papeete Market.

Water is safe to drink from the tap unless advised otherwise.

Safety: very safe for all travellers.

Food: supermarket, Papeete Market, and restaurants.

Easy Mart Prince Hinoï near Papeete Market offers a great selection of ready-to-eat food at very reasonable prices. This is where the locals shop every day. If you go after 6 pm, the cooked food will be heavily discounted.

Papeete Market offers a variety of local food from US$3 6-inch sub to US$10 Poisson Cru.

Restaurants range from US$30 + per dish. There are plenty to choose from. There are also food trucks and street foods if the weather is nice. Many stores close early around noon on Saturdays and closed on Sundays.

I recommend that you download an offline Google map if you don’t have data. This can help you navigate around town. Sight seeing:

Driving around the island will allow you to visit some popular black-sand beaches and tropical gardens. All the sightseeing locations are free admission.

Suggested Intienary:

Day 1: Arrival & book a car rental if possible

Day 2: Papeete Market and local shops

Day 3: Plage Vaiava, Harrison Smith Botanical Garden

Day 4: Belvédère de Taravao, Teahupo'o, Fa'aruma'i Waterfalls, Arahoho Blowhole

Day 5: Plage de la Pointe Venus

Tahiti is the gateway to access other islands in French Polynesia. The most popular are Bora Bora and Mo'orea.
