Explore Apulia & Matera from Taranto

- arrival in Taranto in the morning (departure the day before).

- Explore the historic center of Taranto, known as the "Old Town", with its picturesque narrow streets and historic buildings.

Spend the morning in Bari, taking a train from Taranto. Get lost in the historic center of Bari, known as "Bari Vecchia", with its charming alleys and historic churches. Visit the Basilica of San Nicola, an important pilgrimage site which houses the remains of St. Nicholas. Enjoy a walk along Bari's seafront and admire the sea view. Eat the famous Focaccia Barese from Panificio Santa Rita.

Take a train from Bari to Polignano in the afternoon. Explore the charming historic center of Polignano a Mare, located on a cliff overlooking the sea. Admire the area's spectacular sea caves on a boat tour. Relax at Lama Monachile beach, a beautiful beach surrounded by cliffs. Return to Taranto, take the train from Polignano at 17:26.

Visit the Aragonese Castle, a medieval fortress located on an island in the center of the city. Take a guided tour of the city. 

Take the flixbus to Matera at 10:45 from Taranto (10€).

Visit the famous Sassi of Matera, a complex of ancient houses carved into the rock, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Explore the suggestive alleys and squares of Matera, immersing yourself in its unique history. Admire the panoramic view of the city from the Cathedral of Matera.

Take the bus back to Taranto at 6.10pm from Matera.

Admire the Baroque architecture of Lecce by visiting the Basilica of Santa Croce and the Piazza del Duomo. Explore the Castle of Charles V, a majestic fortress that also houses a museum. Enjoy an evening stroll in the lively Via Umberto I, full of shops, bars and restaurants. Take the train back to Taranto.

Admire the Cathedral of San Cataldo, an impressive Romanesque church with a mix of architectural styles.

Take the bus to Gallipoli. It’s about a 2 hours drive but it is worth it. Take a stroll through the old city, situated on an island connected only by a bridge. The beaches are phenomenal. Try local food such as puccia with burrata, taralli, olive oil and orecchiette. Stop at the beach and go for a swim.
