"Apollonia was an ancient Greek trade colony that evolved into a significant city-state in southern Illyria, located near the right bank of the Aoös/Vjosë River, about 10 kilometers from the Adriatic Sea. Founded around 600 BC by Greek colonists from Corinth and possibly Corcyra, Apollonia emerged as a vital trading hub due to its strategic position. The initial establishment was facilitated by local Illyrians, highlighting a cooperative relationship rather than conflict. Over time, Apollonia gained autonomy, evolving into an independent polis with an oligarchic governance structure led by a small elite descended from the original colonists, as noted by Aristotle.
During the 2nd century BC, Apollonia formed an alliance with the Roman Republic, which utilized the city as a military base. This partnership contributed to the city’s prosperity during the Roman period, when it became known for its esteemed school of philosophy, rhetoric, and military training. Notably, Augustus, the first Roman emperor, studied in Apollonia during his youth. However, the city began to decline in the 3rd century AD as its harbor silted due to natural disasters, including earthquakes, leading to its eventual abandonment in the 4th century AD.
Today, the remnants of Apollonia stand as a testament to its historical significance, having been designated an archaeological park by the Albanian government on April 7, 2003. The site is recognized not only for its ancient ruins but also for its role in the cultural and educational development of the region. Apollonia is mentioned among the modern bishoprics of the Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania and serves as a titular see in the Latin Church, indicating its enduring legacy in Albanian history."
