"The center of Montpellier is the Place de la Comedie - named after the historic theater of the same name .
Your experience in Montpellier begins here!
The Opera Comedie- founded in 1888 which still has theatre and comedy shows on a weekly basis.
The center of the plaza has the historic Fontaine des Trois Graces(Three Graces) created in 1777 . Which features a marble sculpture by Etienne Dantoine. Based on greek mythology the daughters of Zeus who represent - seduction, beauty, nature, human creativity and fertility. The sculptor actually went to italy to select the marble blocks he carved to form the centerpeice of the fountain.
Although the original sculpture is now inside the Opera de Comedie, the plaster recreation was carefully cast from the original.
The water runs off the sides and visitors are allowed to, and often dip thier feet into the water .
The plaza has sidewalk cafes and bars to enjoy the views of the Opera and people watch."
