What people say

"While taking in the view from the Miradouro da Vista do Rei (King's View), you can't help but notice the odd building behind you. The concrete building looks like a prison. It was supposed to be a five-star hotel called the Hotel Monte Palace. The hotel opened in 1989 with 88 rooms, two restaurants, a bar, a nightclub, and those stunning views. The owners, who were apparently ahead of their time in declaring the Azores a great vacation destination, declared bankruptcy less than two years later. The hotel was looted and spray painted. Since it's full of broken glass and trash, the area has been gated off. It's now called the Ruínas do Monte Palace Hotel (the Ruins of the Monte Palace Hotel). It's an eerie, but strangely fascinating, stop in a beautiful area."
"FREE An abandoned 5-star hotel that once promised luxury and unrivaled views of the iconic twin lakes below. Even though it's no longer in use, many people visit because it's set high up with great views of two beautiful lakes, and the old, overgrown building has its own mysterious charm. "
"Today, “No Trespassing” signs hang around the property, preventing the public from entering. The risk is up to you."
