What people say

"Consecrated in 1197, the basilica is popular with pilgrims and houses the relics of San Nicola. These relics in fact were moved here from Turkey where he originally lay. San Nicola of Bari is also known as Saint Nicholas of Myra. He is the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, children, brewers, pawnbrokers, unmarried people and various types of students. His most famous legend is that of saving three girls from being sold into prostitution, by leaving them money for a dowry. He had a legendary habit of gift giving which inspired our own Saint Nick, or Santa Claus. "
"This is the church with the relics of San Nicolo ( Saint Nick- Santa Claus) and also a "miracle" liquid, the manna. Most locals have a decorated bottle in their house which is painted with San Nicolo for the liquid."
