The basilica was rebuilt in the 9th century and again in the 12th century. The current facade of the basilica was designed by the architect Leon Battista Alberti in the 15th century.
The interior of the basilica is decorated with paintings and sculptures by some of the most important artists of the 15th and 16th centuries, including Raphael, Titian, and Bernini."
