"😊 I’d visited the Snæfellsnes Penisula several times without knowing that the Gerðuberg Cliffs existed. But am very happy to have explored them! 😮 They almost look manmade, a kilometre-long cliff of hexagonal basalt columns resembling a wall protecting a fortress or castle. 🌋 The cliffs were formed thousands of years ago when the sea rapidly cooled lava flowing from a nearby volcano. 🚗 The Gerðuberg Cliffs are just over a half an hour's drive from Borgarnes. 👉 From Route 54, you'll turn down a bumpy gravel road, but there is no need for a 4x4. NOTE: A side road near the cliffs leads to a farm; the kind farmer has put up the sign advising you to go one road over if you make a wrong turn... but don't worry, it's pretty straightforward to find. 🚘 There are several free parking areas near the cliffs. 🚗 By parking area, I don't mean anything formal with lines, more like a flattish space off the road where it’s safe to leave your car. 🚶Walk around and take it all in. You can scramble up (carefully) over moss-covered rocks to get closer to the cliffs, or take the trail at either end up to the top. 💰 COST: Free 🚗 PARKING: Free ⏰ HOURS: Always open!"
