What people say

" The Kotor Fortress, a formidable architectural marvel perched atop the hills overlooking the Bay of Kotor, is a testament to the city's rich history and strategic importance. Dating back to the medieval period, this imposing fortress served as a crucial defensive stronghold, protecting the city and its inhabitants from foreign invasions and maritime threats. With its sturdy stone walls, fortified towers, and commanding views of the surrounding landscape, the Kotor Fortress offers visitors a glimpse into the city's storied past and architectural ingenuity. Travelers can embark on a scenic hike up the steep slopes to explore the fortress's well-preserved ruins, marveling at the panoramic vistas of the bay, the medieval rooftops of the Old Town, and the rugged mountains that encircle the city."
"If I had to recommend one thing in Kotor, it would be hiking to its fortress. This is where you will see Montenegro's most iconic view. I have to warn you, it is not for the faint hearted. There is 1350 steps to climb, it's most likely going to be very hot with no shade, very crowded, and the switchbacks will seem to be endless. But I promise that your efforts will be rewarded! There are a couple of nice views already along the way up, but the best are obviously at the very top when you have a full panorama of Kotor Bay. "
"Hike up to see a beautiful view of Kotor and explore the old fortress! There are two ways to get to the top... one you'll pay a little fee and walk up about 1,350 steps, while the other is free but will take you up about 70 switchbacks to an entrance by ladder through a window of the fortress. You choose!"

Mentioned in these guides

While its neighbor Croatia gets a lot of attention among world travelers, Montenegro is a personal favorite of the places I've traveled to over the years! My husband and I were looking at places to go for our anniversary one day, hoping for a mix of what we both love when we travel. He's an outdoor adventure fanatic, looking for any and every opportunity to commune with the clouds. I, however, prefer to sit at a cafe table on a cobblestone street, drinking a cup of coffee and reading a book, while I take in the unique buildings and shop for that souvenir I'll take home to add to the collection. In my researching, I found unbeatable flights to a country I hadn't ever heard of, but had it all: Montenegro. Whether you prefer mountains, quaint walled cities, the sea, or a combination of all of these things, Montenegro won't disappoint. While only about the size of the state of Connecticut, Montenegro packs a punch with how much there is to see in the country. Montenegro is right across from Italy on the Adriatic Sea, sharing borders with Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, and Albania. With a 7 day trip, you can see the majority of the country, experiencing the variety and beauty of Montenegro and its people. In this guide, you'll find everything you need to plan your trip to Montenegro! **Included: a list of basic information for travel to Montenegro, recommendations for how to get around, places to stay, what to do, as well as a sample 7 day itinerary
