"Built in the 14th century as the Chora Church during the Byzantine era. Commissioned by Theodore Metochites, a high-ranking Byzantine official. Considered one of the most important examples of Byzantine art and architecture. Converted into a mosque after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453. Frescoes and mosaics were covered with plaster during the Ottoman period. Restored and reopened as a museum in 1948."
