Eat your way through Copenhagen cafés

I'm traveling to Copenhagen in May 2023. This is my list of 100+ destinations based on tens of hours of research from well-trusted sources that range from personal contacts to travel experts and publications. 

The list is categorized by place type, inclusive of restaurants, cafés, shops, museums, and playgrounds. While my research accounts for the fact that I'll have my 2-year-old daughter in tow, I don't exclude things because of that.

After my trip in May, I will update this based on my experience and highlights.

In the past decade, the Copenhagen food scene has really exploded. From the high-end food scene, to the cozy cafés selling the local BMO (scroll to find out what it is!) - you definitely won't leave this city hungry. But you'll probably be a little bit broke. 

In this guide, I've saved all my favorite places (plus in the bottom, I added if they have additional locations/branches) - and I'll also continuously add any new spots that I try.

I know what you're thinking...I can't wait to eat some Danishes! Well, guess what? In Denmark, these laminated pastries are called wienerbrød or in English "Vienna bread". Why you ask? Austrian bakers brought the technique of laminated dough to Denmark in the mid-1800s after Danish bakers went on strike. Luckily, København has some amazing bakeries. 

Enough about the history of wienerbrød. What should you eat?

Hart Bageri

Hart Bageri is many people's Copenhagen favorite, with a head baker who's resume includes Copenhagen's Noma and San Francisco's Tartine. They offer a full pastry and coffee menu, with a couple of sandwiches on offer as well.

While it wasn't my favorite bakery (I found both Juno and Andersen & Maillard pastries to be superior), it is certainly worth a stop on your Copenhagen bakery tour.

Their Fredericksburg location is quite small, so it's best to grab-and-go.

What to order: Sausage roll, chocolate chip cookie 

This is the original location on Gammel Kongevej - but in the past 12 months, they've really expanded all across the city. The pastries are delicious. Get the spandauer  (sometimes they'll have season ones with fresh fruit on top) and cardamom croissant. If you're feeling extra, get the basque cheesecake which is my absolute favorite.

The first bakery we went to upon arrival in Copenhagen.  The cardamom flavoured bun (made from croissant dough) was exceptional and everything else was delicious too. 

It was so good we (the husband )came back the morning of our flight to bring some baked goodies on the flight home.  

My favourites are the Cardamon Croissant and the sourdough breakfast bun.

Fun fact, Richard Hart is well known for his time as head baker at San Francisco's Tartine Bakery. I can fully vouch his creations are worth any queue. 

Anywhere that has a chef that's come from Noma will immediately excite me and get bookmarked - and this place is no exception. Apparently there are long lines on Saturday mornings for Hart's freshly-baked bread and pastries!
