"If you already think Iceland is a remote destination, just wait until you reach the Westfjords. The northwest corner of the country is off the beaten path. Way off. It's only connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus (just seven miles wide) and ferries. The interior is full of mountains (including a glacier) and powerful waterfalls. The coastline is fringed with deep fjords, steep cliffs, and windswept beaches (one even has red sand). Plus, the Westfjords face Greenland.
This region is home to Hornstrandir (a vast nature reserve where the elusive Arctic fox lives) and Látrabjarg (Europe's largest bird cliffs). Small fishing communities, including Ísafjörður, sit along the water. It's also known for having some of the harshest weather in Iceland. Many roads and businesses are closed all winter. Ice, snow, and the wind make traveling here quite dangerous. This makes the Westfjords a true summer destination--one you'll have mostly to yourself."
