The heart of the fjords is Norway's second-largest city, Bergen, and is a stunner! After going in the summer and then late winter, I'm happy to put all my suggestions in one spot for you to enjoy the city to the max.

A Foodie's Guide to Bergen, Norway (with local rec's)

There are a few types of food you'll want to try in Bergen and these are the spots to get them. I've created a full YouTube video on these foods which you'll find at the bottom of this guide. Enjoy!

This might just be the #1 thing to try in Bergen. You'll find a variety of hot dogs like a cheese-filled which I'm sure is amazing, but the reindeer is a must-try while you're in area. It tastes like a combo of pork and beef with delicious spices making it a treat. Definitely get the lingonberry sauce, and decide if ketchup and/or mustard is for you as well.

Named for the fact that in the old days it used to cost one skilling, this cinnamon bun-type pastry is made light and airy with cinnamon inside and topped with sugar. Don't expect a punch of cinnamon, but instead a subtle flavor in this sweet bun.

Both of these spots are worth visiting for the Skillingsboller and other pastries.

Norway and fish go together like peas in a pod! This restaurant has been run by the same family for 4 generations since 1910 and has a secret family recipe for their Bergen Fish Soup. Make a reservation for one evening for a local experience with delicious food. 

This might just have been the best meal I had in Bergen...and I ate really well. The Persetorsk is my favorite thing, and the Raspeballer dish is only available on Thursdays.

I love fine dining and Bergen has a few serious gems! I've been to the Frescohallen and the others are on my list for next time but have great reviews.

I'm a sucker for a good bar. Both times I've been in the city, I've ended up at No Stress. It's cozy, with good service, and great drinks. The others are highly recommended!

I had one more spot I wanted to mention but didn't fit above. My local friend and I ended up here and really enjoyed it. They specialize in pizza, oysters, and wine. All were amazing!
