Definitely stick to eating at places that aren't in main tourist areas like the Piazzas. The restaurants in those areas are generally overpriced and catering to tourists. To get good, authentic Italian food, you're going to want to eat off the beaten path.

There are free water fountains all over Rome. The water comes from the ancient Roman aqueducts, so it's fresh water from the mountains, and it's good to drink. It's really nice and cold. So you should always carry a water bottle with you to refill at the fountains. There's no need to buy water from anyone because you can fill your water bottle up anywhere. It's especially great in the summer time.

If you have the time, I definitely recommend doing a day trip to Tivoli from Rome.
