Travel safe

Metro Vancouver is generally a safe place to visit. Like anywhere though, it's always a good idea to take precautions to ensure your safety while having a great time.

Be aware of your surroundings, especially in busy areas, keep your valuables secure; listen to your body and know your physical limitations. As well, stick to reputable transportation options, especially if travelling alone at night.

Remember to have fun, but stay safe!

About Vancouver

Located on the west coast of Canada, the area that is now Metro Vancouver (also known as the Lower Mainland) was inhabited for thousands of years by indigenous peoples, including the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations before the first European explorers arrived in 1791.

Today, the region is made up of 22 municipalities with a diverse population, bustling cultural scene and stunning natural beauty that include small towns and villages, like Belcarra and Bowen Island, to major cities such as Richmond, New Westminster and the City of Vancouver.

Vancouver started out as a sawmill established in 1862 that led to the growth of a small settlement called Gastown (now a neighbourhood in Vancouver), which was incorporated as the City of Vancouver in 1886.

In the early 20th century Vancouver experienced rapid growth after the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885, becoming an important port during World War II.

Vancouver has hosted major national and international events like the JUNO Awards; the 1986 World Exposition (Expo86); the 24th summit between US and Soviet or Russian leaders in 1993, with then US President Bill Clinton and Russian President Boris Yeltsin; 2009 World Police & Fire Games; the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.  In 2026, Vancouver will co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
